Swiss Universities Pioneer Open-Source AI for the Public Good

EPFL and ETH Zurich will release a large language model this summer, trained on the “Alps” supercomputer. This represents the world’s largest open science effort dedicated to AI foundation models.

Full Transparency
Unlike commercial AI systems developed behind closed doors, this Swiss initiative will make its source code, model weights, and training data completely public and transparent. “Fully open models enable high-trust applications and are necessary for advancing research about AI risks and opportunities,” explains researcher Imanol Schlag.

Global Reach
The model demonstrates fluency in over 1,000 languages, trained on datasets spanning more than 1,500 languages with 60% English and 40% non-English content. Available in 8 billion and 70 billion parameter versions, it’s designed for global applicability.

The Swiss AI Initiative involves over 800 researchers across 10+ Swiss institutions, positioning this as a credible European alternative to commercial AI systems and promoting transparency in AI development.
